FIRE ENGULFS FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION IN ENUGU

By: Muftau Fatimo
On Monday night, a fire destroyed the building housing the Exams and Records and Procurement units at the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu, in Enugu State.
The blaze reportedly occurred in the absence of electricity and with no nearby bushfire, prompting suspicions that it may have been an act of sabotage.
Sources at the college told the media on Wednesday that the building, which also contained the Centre for Educational Technology, the Governing Council Chambers, and the Integrated Science Lab, was completely razed.
A staff member, speaking anonymously, suggested that the fire may have been deliberately set to obstruct ongoing petitions filed with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
“I can tell you categorically that the building was burned down because of several petitions to the EFCC, ICPC, and the Federal Ministry of Education regarding the criminal diversion of college vehicles and embezzlement of funds,” the source alleged.
The staff member added that with the provost’s position recently advertised, there were fears that sensitive documents needed for potential prosecution were targeted.
In a message sent to the Governing Council and made available to our correspondent, a concerned stakeholder described the fire as “despicable” and raised concerns about students whose academic records were destroyed.
The statement partially read: “On Tuesday, 3rd March 2026, we were met with the news of a fire that engulfed the Centre for Educational Technology building. Everything was reduced to ashes; not a single item was spared. It is important to note that there was no evidence of bush burning and no electricity in the compound.

“What will happen to students whose results were destroyed? How can someone who graduated in 2012 obtain a transcript?”
The petitioner also accused the college management of ignoring council directives, including failing to conduct a scheduled election for the position of Deputy Provost.
Attempts to reach the Provost, Dr. Pauline N. Ikwuegbu, for comment were unsuccessful.
The Enugu State Fire Service has not yet released a statement regarding the cause of the fire.
Stakeholders have called on the governing council to take urgent and decisive action to prevent what they described as the “imminent collapse and total destruction” of the institution.
