The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday suffered another blow in the House of Representatives as Aliyu Misau, the lawmaker representing Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, officially defected to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Misau’s defection comes just days after four other members of the Bauchi caucus in the House, also elected on the PDP platform, left the party for the APM—deepening concerns over the opposition party’s declining influence in the state.
His resignation was contained in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and read during plenary on Wednesday.
In the letter, Misau cited the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP as the reason for his decision to leave the party.
He expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve his constituency but said internal disputes had made it difficult for him to effectively represent his constituents.
His defection is seen as part of a broader political realignment following the reported exit of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, from the PDP to the APM. Since then, several political office holders and party loyalists in the state have either joined the APM or indicated interest in doing so.
Political observers say lawmakers aligned with the governor were expected to follow his move, given his influence in the state’s political structure and the growing instability within the PDP.
The development further reduces the PDP’s numbers in the House of Representatives and highlights the party’s ongoing internal struggles.
For months, the PDP has been battling leadership disputes at both national and state levels, with disagreements over party control and electoral strategy fueling divisions among key stakeholders.
The crisis has triggered a series of defections by elected officials and prominent members, raising questions about the party’s cohesion ahead of future elections.
With Misau’s exit, the APM continues to expand its presence in Bauchi State, strengthened by the influx of lawmakers and political figures from the PDP.
