The Kano State House of Assembly has withdrawn impeachment proceedings against former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, following his resignation from office.

The decision was announced during plenary on Tuesday after the House resumed from its Sallah recess, with Speaker Jibril Falgore presiding.

According to a statement by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Shawai, the House formally set aside the impeachment process after reading Gwarzo’s resignation letter dated March 27, 2026.

In the letter, Gwarzo stated that his resignation was voluntary and in line with Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), taking immediate effect from March 27.

Speaking with journalists, the Majority Leader, Lawal Dala, said the impeachment process became unnecessary following the former deputy governor’s exit from office, adding that any allegations against him would now be handled by relevant anti-corruption agencies.

“We are not the EFCC or ICPC; we discharge our responsibilities as a legislative body,” he said.

In a related development, a lawmaker representing Kiru Constituency announced his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the African Democratic Congress, citing internal crises within his former party.

The House also received the Local Government Audited Accounts for the year ended December 31, 2024. Presenting the report, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Tukur Muhammad Fagge, commended members for their dedication during the review process.

Additionally, Chairman of the Committee on Higher Education, Abdulhamid Abdul Minjibir, moved a motion for a bill seeking the establishment of Minjibir College of Education and Legal Studies to expand access to tertiary education and ease congestion in the Kano metropolis.

In his remarks, Speaker Falgore congratulated the people of Kano State and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on the successful completion of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr celebrations, urging residents to sustain the values of unity, discipline, and peaceful coexistence.
