The Kwara State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against kidnapping and violent crime with the arrest of a suspected gang leader and the recovery of two AK-47 rifles during an intelligence-led operation in Baruten Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out by the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in collaboration with operatives from the Okuta Divisional Headquarters, followed credible intelligence on criminal activities within the area.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the operation took place on June 1, 2026, during a routine raid in the Tabida area of Okuta, where several individuals suspected of criminal involvement were apprehended.
Preliminary investigations by the VCRU led to the identification of one Umar Abubakar, popularly known as “Manti,” as the alleged leader of a kidnapping syndicate linked to multiple abduction cases and other violent crimes across parts of Kwara North.
Further intelligence-driven operations resulted in the recovery of two AK-47 rifles with fully loaded magazines, which police believe were used by the syndicate in carrying out criminal activities within affected communities.
The Command described the recovery as a significant blow to the operational capacity of the gang and a major step toward improving security and restoring public confidence in the area.
Police authorities disclosed that the suspects are currently in custody and are assisting investigators with information expected to lead to the arrest of additional members of the criminal network.
Commending the officers involved, the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, praised the professionalism, resilience, and coordinated efforts of the VCRU and supporting units in achieving the breakthrough.
He further assured residents that intelligence-led operations have been intensified across strategic locations in the state, with sustained deployment of personnel and resources to safeguard lives and property.
The Command added that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations as efforts continue to dismantle the wider criminal network operating within the region.
