LAGOS BEGINS FIRST PHASE OF 2026 MICRO ENTERPRISE SUPPORT INITIATIVE

The Lagos State Government has flagged off the first phase of the 2026 Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI), a programme designed to empower small business owners and reduce poverty through financial assistance and the provision of work tools.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, inaugurated the programme on Tuesday.
The first batch of beneficiaries comprises traders, fashion designers, food vendors, technicians, barbers, and artisans selected through what the state government described as a transparent verification process conducted across the state’s local government areas.
Implemented by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), the Micro-Enterprise Support Initiative was introduced in 2019 to address poverty at the grassroots and promote inclusive economic growth.
The programme targets socio-economically disadvantaged women, indigent youths, and graduates of government skills acquisition centres by providing business training, start-up capital, and work tools to establish and expand their businesses.
Representing the governor, Hamzat said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to creating economic opportunities for vulnerable residents and strengthening micro and small enterprises, which remain critical to the state’s economy.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. (Mrs.) Cecilia Bolaji Dada, said the state had continued to record significant milestones through its poverty alleviation programmes.
According to her, over 35,000 Lagos residents have graduated from the state’s tuition-free Skills Acquisition Centres under the current administration, while more than 18,000 beneficiaries have received business start-up equipment through the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative.
“Every piece of equipment presented today represents more than a means of livelihood; it is an investment in brighter futures, stronger families, and a more resilient economy,” Dada said.
The state government added that the programme is expected to promote self-reliance, generate employment opportunities and improve household incomes by helping beneficiaries build sustainable livelihoods.
