The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that armed gunmen stormed Ajebo Community near Agbowa in Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA, insisting that the incident was a land dispute between two families and not an attack by hoodlums, as widely circulated.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the police described the report published by New Telegraph as “mischievous, untrue, and misleading,” stressing that no gunmen invaded the community and no lives were lost.
According to the statement, the unrest that occurred in the community resulted from a dispute between two contending families, which escalated into chaos. Upon receiving the distress call, the Command deployed a joint intervention team comprising Tactical Squads, Police Mobile Force (PMF) Anti-Riot officers, personnel from Agbowa Division and Area N Command, and other special units.
Police said normalcy was swiftly restored, and residents immediately resumed their daily activities.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings revealed that there was no firing of firearms, no injuries, and no fatalities, contrary to the claims reported online.
“There was no invasion of the community by any armed group from anywhere,” the statement clarified. “Police detachments acted swiftly, professionally, and restored peace throughout the community.”
The Command confirmed that leaders of the two warring families have been identified and invited for questioning at the office of the Commissioner of Police. They have also been warned to maintain peace, with a reminder that anyone found instigating violence will face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner further cautioned journalists and members of the public against spreading misinformation capable of inciting fear and panic, urging responsible reporting in the interest of public safety.
He reassured residents of Ajebo Community and Lagos State at large of the Command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, security, and order across the state.
