The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has defended its anti-defection policy, which requires all candidates contesting elections on the party’s platform to sign legally binding documents pledging to relinquish their positions if they defect after being elected.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the policy is firmly rooted in the NDC constitution.

According to him, the provision applies to candidates seeking elective offices, including governorship, National Assembly and other political positions under the party’s banner.

He explained that Article 16 of the party’s constitution explicitly outlines the anti-defection rule, requiring elected members to submit an affidavit committing to remain with the party throughout their tenure.

Director stressed that the measure is aimed at strengthening democratic values and promoting accountability among elected officials.

“Any member of our party should be familiar with the constitution, which clearly states in Article 16 that elected officials must provide an affidavit affirming their commitment to remain in the party,” he said.

He further distinguished between politicians focused solely on winning elections and statesmen dedicated to nation-building, noting that the NDC prioritises Nigeria’s long-term growth and development.

Director also urged other political parties to adopt similar measures to strengthen democracy and uphold the rule of law in the country.
