The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with a total of 186,291 candidates participating in the nationwide exercise.

According to the examination body, the candidates sat for 12 subjects and were drawn from the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and five foreign countries.

NECO disclosed that the examination commenced on April 20 and concluded successfully on April 30, 2026.

The release of the results followed the approval of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at the Council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday.

Speaking at the meeting, the Chairperson of the Award Committee and Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folake David, who represented the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination and the timely processing and release of the results.

She commended NECO for the smooth administration of the examination and the efficiency displayed in completing the marking and result compilation processes.

The meeting was attended by secondary school principals from across the country, alongside members of NECO’s management team.

Meanwhile, the Award Committee approved July 22 and 23, 2026, for the conduct of the BECE Re-sit Examination in Mathematics and English Studies.

NECO explained that the re-sit examination is intended for candidates with conditional deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies, or both subjects.

According to the Council, the initiative provides affected candidates with an opportunity to address their deficiencies and secure the qualifications required for admission into Senior Secondary School One (SSS I) without having to repeat an academic session.

The examination body reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining credible assessment standards and ensuring that qualified candidates are given a fair opportunity to advance in their educational pursuits.

The Basic Education Certificate Examination serves as a key assessment for students completing their junior secondary education and seeking progression to the senior secondary school level.
