No fewer than 10 persons have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries following the collapse of a residential building in the Alakija area of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Thursday at Old Ojo Road, near Alakija Bus Stop along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Satellite Town, prompting an immediate response from emergency agencies.

Confirming the development, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the collapsed structure was a multi-occupied residential building that was inhabited at the time of the incident.

According to her, the agency received a distress call at about 11:37 a.m. and promptly deployed emergency responders from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station, who arrived at the scene 12 minutes later.

“The incident involves the collapse of a storey building, an existing residential structure occupied by multiple residents at the time of the incident. As of the time of this report, 10 persons have been rescued alive with varying degrees of injuries and have been handed over to medical personnel for necessary treatment,” Adeseye stated.

She added that search and rescue operations were still ongoing as emergency workers continued efforts to locate and evacuate any victims who might remain trapped beneath the rubble.

Several emergency response agencies were mobilised to the scene, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Navy, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

The collapse also triggered significant traffic disruption along the busy Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the incident caused a major traffic backlog stretching as far as the Oluti area.

According to the agency, an excavator has been deployed to assist in the rescue operation, while traffic officers have been stationed around the area to manage vehicular movement and ease congestion.

LASTMA advised motorists to remain patient, comply with traffic directives, and make use of alternative routes where necessary.

The latest incident comes barely 24 hours after a building under construction collapsed along Odili Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, claiming one life while three others were rescued.

It also follows another building collapse reported less than 48 hours earlier in the Iwofe area of Rivers State, raising renewed concerns over construction standards, regulatory compliance, and building safety across the country.

Building collapses remain a recurring challenge in Nigeria, with experts often attributing the incidents to poor workmanship, the use of substandard construction materials, and the circumvention of regulatory oversight.
