The media aide to Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Idris Zekeri Jnr, has said the party’s legal team is reviewing the Federal High Court judgment that nullified an earlier ruling directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, Zekeri appealed to party supporters to remain calm, assuring them that the NDC was examining the judgment and would take the necessary legal steps to challenge it.

According to him, the party has received numerous enquiries following what it described as an unusual ruling delivered by the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State.

“We have received news of today’s ruling from the court in Lokoja concerning the legal status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

“While our legal team carefully studies the judgment and prepares immediate corrective and appellate actions, our principal urges supporters, coalition partners and patriotic Nigerians across the country to remain calm and focused,” he stated.

Zekeri noted that the party expected resistance in its efforts to challenge the existing political order and described the ruling as a temporary obstacle rather than a setback capable of derailing its ambitions.

“Today’s decision is merely a hurdle, not the end of the road. Our resolve to offer Nigerians a credible, transparent and formidable alternative remains firm. The platform we are building is strong, and we will vigorously defend our legal rights. Supporters should not lose hope; while the journey may encounter temporary difficulties, our destination remains unchanged,” he added.

The statement came shortly after Justice Isah Dashen of the Federal High Court in Lokoja set aside the court’s December 10, 2025 judgment that had ordered INEC to register the NDC.

Justice Dashen ruled that the earlier judgment affected the interests of the Peace Movement Party, which claimed ownership of the logo used in securing the registration order but was not joined as a party in the original suit.

Counsel to the applicant, C.S. Ekeocha, explained that the court directed all parties to revert to their positions before the December 10, 2025 judgment and ordered that all relevant parties be included before the substantive matter is heard again.

He further stated that the ruling effectively voided all actions taken by INEC based on the earlier judgment, including the recognition of the NDC, issuance of its registration certificate, its inclusion in the commission’s records and any appearance on election ballot papers, pending the final determination of the case.
