The Ondo State Government has inaugurated a steering committee for the Safe Schools Programme as part of efforts to safeguard students and educational institutions from kidnapping and other security threats across the state.
The Safe Schools Initiative, a Federal Government programme, is aimed at protecting students, teachers, and school infrastructure from violence, abduction, and other forms of attacks.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Akure on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, said the committee was established to provide strategic direction, coordinate stakeholders, and oversee the effective implementation of the programme in the state.
According to him, the committee comprises representatives of the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Amotekun Corps, religious and traditional leaders, as well as members of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA).

Ajibefun, who chairs the committee, charged members to support the implementation of the Safe Schools Programme and strengthen measures aimed at preventing security threats within educational institutions.
He stressed that the success of the initiative depends on the active participation and commitment of all stakeholders, noting that security is a collective responsibility that requires vigilance, preparedness, resilience, and coordinated action.
The commissioner urged members to discharge their responsibilities with diligence, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose to ensure the safety of learners and educators across the state.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry and Secretary of the committee, Akindele Ige, described the establishment of the committee as a direct response to increasing security threats targeting schools.
He noted that recent attacks on educational institutions have underscored the need for deliberate, coordinated, and sustained efforts to protect students, teachers, and school facilities.
Ige emphasised that a secure learning environment is essential for quality education, stating that meaningful teaching and effective learning cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
