The Oyo State Government has lifted the dusk-to-dawn curfew earlier imposed across 10 local government areas bordering the Old Oyo National Park after intensified security operations aimed at rescuing pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.
The government announced the development in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade.
It directed residents of the affected local government areas to resume their normal activities while assuring them that security agencies would continue operations aimed at ending the kidnapping crisis.
“The government is closely monitoring the security situation, and efforts are ongoing to bring the kidnapping episode to an end,” Oyelade stated.
The curfew was initially imposed for 48 hours from June 24, running daily from 4pm to 8am across 10 local government areas surrounding the Old Oyo National Park, before it was extended by another 24 hours
The measure was aimed at supporting ongoing security operations against kidnappers and other criminal elements operating within the area.
The affected local government areas are Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo and Atiba.
The curfew was imposed following the May 15 attack on three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esienle communities of Oriire Local Government Area, where gunmen kidnapped dozens of pupils and teachers in coordinated assaults that triggered widespread concern over rising insecurity in the South-West.
In the aftermath of the abduction, the state government, working alongside the military, police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps and other security agencies, stepped up rescue efforts. Authorities have consistently reassured residents that securing the release of the victims remains a top priority and that security operations are continuing.
