The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected ritualists for allegedly being in possession of an item suspected to be a human skull in Ijio, Iwajowa Local Government Area of the state.
The arrests followed a joint intelligence-led operation carried out by the police in collaboration with the Oyo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to the statement, the operation was launched after the police received credible intelligence that a suspect was unlawfully in possession of an item believed to be a human skull.
Acting on the intelligence, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, directed a joint team of police operatives and Amotekun personnel to carry out the operation, leading to the arrest of Shittu Isah of Kajola Area, Ijio.
Olayinka said the suspected human skull was recovered during the operation and has been taken into police custody as an exhibit.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to exhuming the skull from a Muslim burial ground in Ijio.
“Shittu Isah confessed to having exhumed the suspected human skull from a Muslim burial ground in Ijio.
“He further confessed that he did not act alone, a development that led to the arrest of one Tunde Ajibade, who is currently assisting the police with ongoing investigations,” the statement read.
The police said the recovered exhibit has been preserved for forensic examination to determine its nature.
The command added that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged offence, determine the motive behind the act and identify any other individuals connected to the case.
