The Oyo State Police Command has launched an investigation into an armed attack on the Nigeria Immigration Service Passport Office in Ogbomoso, during which a firearm and other valuables were reportedly stolen.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night at about 10:00 pm at the facility located along the Ogbomoso–Ilorin Expressway, near an NNPC filling station.
Sources said the attackers invaded the premises while nearby commercial activities were still ongoing around the Ayanyan Cattle Market, overpowered officers on duty, and carted away firearms and other items before fleeing the scene.
A security source disclosed that the assailants struck under the cover of darkness, leaving officers unable to immediately respond to the attack.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed that the Command had commenced a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
“Preliminary information available to the Command indicates that at about 8:45 pm, the officer in charge of the facility raised an alarm following the invasion of the premises by armed hoodlums who scaled the perimeter fence from the rear,” the statement read.
According to the police, about five armed suspects gained access to the premises through a bushy rear fence and attacked two Immigration officers on night duty with sticks and other weapons.
The attackers reportedly made away with a G3 rifle, ammunition, a mobile phone, a generating set, and a motorcycle battery before escaping through the same route.
The injured officers have since received medical attention and are said to be in stable condition.
The Command added that surveillance and tactical teams have been deployed to comb surrounding bushes and possible escape routes in a bid to apprehend the suspects and recover the stolen items.
Intelligence operatives have also been activated to gather actionable information, while a joint task team has been formed in collaboration with the Nigeria Immigration Service to strengthen the investigation.
Commissioner of Police, Olugbemiga Abimbola, directed all relevant units to intensify efforts to ensure the swift arrest of those responsible and recovery of stolen weapons.
The Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, assuring that all information received would be treated with strict confidentiality.
