The Oyo State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation targeting unmarked vehicles, fake and obscured number plates, and the unauthorised covering of registration plates across the state.

The operation, which began on Thursday, was announced in a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade.

According to the police, the exercise is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with lawful vehicle identification standards and strengthening the state’s overall security framework.

The Command said the enforcement drive is part of ongoing efforts to reduce violent crime and other criminal activities, noting that proper vehicle identification remains critical to effective policing.

“In furtherance of its unwavering commitment to ensuring a safer and more secure environment, the Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation targeting unmarked vehicular objects, fake and obscured number plates, as well as unauthorized covering of vehicle plates,” the statement read.

It warned that any individual found violating the directive would be arrested, while such vehicles and motorcycles would be impounded in line with existing laws and operational procedures.

The Command also disclosed that it would intensify stop-and-search operations, intelligence-led patrols, and coordinated raids on identified criminal hotspots across the state.

It added that there would be increased police visibility and strategic deployment of personnel in both urban and rural areas as part of the security measures.

“These measures are part of a broader security framework designed to deter criminal activities, enhance rapid response capabilities, and strengthen public confidence in policing operations,” the statement added.

Residents were urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security personnel during the exercise, as the operations are being carried out in the interest of public safety.

The police further assured the public that all enforcement activities would be conducted professionally, lawfully, and with respect for human rights.

The Command noted that the use of fake, obscured, or improperly registered number plates has remained a persistent security concern in Nigeria, as it is often exploited by criminals to evade identification and arrest.
