At least eight security personnel, including five soldiers and three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), were killed in the early hours of Friday after Boko Haram terrorists launched an attack on a Nigerian Army base in Mandaragirau, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack targeted the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Mandaragirau under 25 Brigade, Sector 2 of Operation HADIN KAI.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Acting Media Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Lt. Col. Haruna Sani, said the troops successfully repelled the assault despite heavy rainfall and poor visibility.

According to him, the terrorists attacked around 3:00 a.m. and attempted to penetrate parts of the military formation under difficult weather conditions.

Sani stated that troops mounted a strong counter-offensive, preventing further incursions and inflicting casualties on the attackers.

However, he disclosed that five soldiers lost their lives during the intense exchange of gunfire and close-range combat, while some military equipment was also affected.

He added that three CJTF operatives were also killed in the battle, while injured personnel were airlifted by the Air Component Command and are currently receiving medical treatment in stable condition.

Operation HADIN KAI paid tribute to the fallen personnel, describing their sacrifice as a reflection of courage, dedication, and commitment to defending the country.

The military further assured that troops remain in full control of the base and continue to dominate the surrounding area, with follow-up operations underway.

The command noted that the attempted assault reflected what it described as the increasing desperation of insurgent groups facing sustained military pressure across the North-East.

Meanwhile, local sources claimed the attackers operated for nearly an hour following a heavy downpour and alleged that more than one location may have come under attack.

The President of the Borno South Youth Alliance, Samaila Kaigama, who also confirmed the incident, called for stronger security measures and improved grassroots intelligence gathering.

He urged the government to establish community-based engagement structures capable of providing timely information on insurgent activities to help prevent future attacks.
