The Oyo State Police Command has recovered a hijacked DAF tanker truck abandoned in the Ile-Igbon area of the state following an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected inter-state vehicle hijackers.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, described the recovery as part of ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities and enhance the safety of lives and property across the state.
According to the statement, operatives acted on credible intelligence which led to the discovery of the abandoned tanker, which had reportedly been left unattended for several days.
Police said preliminary findings indicated that the suspects abandoned the vehicle after realizing they were under surveillance by security operatives tracking their movements.
“Unable to retain possession of the vehicle in the face of heightened police pressure and intelligence-led operations, the suspects fled the area in an apparent attempt to evade arrest,” the statement said.
The Command explained that the tanker was promptly secured and taken into police custody pending further investigation. Subsequent inquiries confirmed that the vehicle was hijacked along the Ijebu-Ode axis of Ogun State by armed criminals.
The driver of the truck reportedly identified the recovered vehicle, confirming it was forcefully taken during the incident, while the owner corroborated the account and noted that the case had already been reported to police authorities in Ogun State.
The Command added that it is working in collaboration with the Ogun State Police Command to complete administrative procedures for the release of the vehicle to its rightful owner.
It further stated that efforts are ongoing to track and arrest the fleeing suspects linked to the hijacking.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to tackling crime, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbemiga, said the Command remains focused on intelligence-driven policing, strategic operations, and inter-agency cooperation.
He also urged residents to support security agencies by providing timely information that could assist in crime detection and prevention, while encouraging the public to use designated emergency contact channels to report suspicious activities.
The police said the recovery underscores ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal networks involved in vehicle hijacking across state boundaries in the South-West region.
