By Aishat Momoh. O.

President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on a wide range of Nigerians who played significant roles in the country’s pro-democracy struggle, particularly during the June 12 political crisis.
The President said the honourees were individuals who endured persecution, imprisonment, exile, and other forms of hardship in the course of Nigeria’s transition to democratic rule.
He noted that the June 12 struggle remains one of the most defining moments in Nigeria’s political history, tied to the annulled 1993 presidential election and the eventual return to civilian governance in 1999.

The list also features Femi Aborisade, Jenkins Alumona, Gbemiga Ogunleye, Muyiwa Adekeye, and Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, among others.
Posthumous awards were also announced for Dr Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi.
The Presidency further recognised several military figures who were involved in the democratic transition process, including former National Security Adviser Col. Sambo Dasuki, alongside other senior officers such as Maj. Gen. M.A. Garba, Brig. Gen. Lawal Jaafaru Isa, Col. Umar Farouk Ahmed, Col. Lawan Gwadabe, Brig. Gen. Jonathan Ndam Temlong, and others.
Additional honourees include Maj. Gen. Chris Eze, Maj. Gen. Harris Dzarma, Col. Isa Jibrin, Maj. Gen. Joseph Oshanupin, Col. Olusegun Oloruntoba, Lt. Col. Happy Kefas Bulus, Col. J. Okai, Col. Emmanuel Ndubueze, Lt. Col. Yakubu Muazu, and Brig. Gen. Yahaya Abubakar, who also serves as the Etsu Nupe.
The Presidency stated that a full list of national award recipients will be released in the coming days as part of broader Democracy Day commemorations.
The announcement underscores the administration’s renewed emphasis on recognising individuals who contributed to Nigeria’s return to democratic governance and the consolidation of civil rule.
