The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a 15-year-old pregnant girl and arrested a suspect in connection with alleged child exploitation and sexual abuse in the state.

The victim was rescued during a police operation conducted around St. Paul’s Secondary School in Achalla, Awka North Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday.

According to the statement, operatives attached to the Achalla Divisional Police Headquarters carried out the raid following intelligence reports concerning activities of youths allegedly involved in the use of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “Mkpuru Mmiri.”

During the operation conducted on June 17, 2026, officers reportedly discovered the teenager in a vulnerable condition and immediately moved to secure her safety.

Police also arrested one Tochukwu Nwora in connection with the case.

Ikenga stated that preliminary investigations suggested the victim had allegedly been subjected to abuse by multiple adult males at different times across Nando in Anambra East Local Government Area, Nteje in Oyi Local Government Area, and Achalla in Awka North Local Government Area.

Investigators further alleged that some of those involved exploited the teenager’s vulnerable circumstances by offering her small amounts of money.

The police said the victim has been placed under protective custody and transferred to the Police Hospital in Awka for medical assessment and appropriate care.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a full-scale investigation.

According to the command, investigators will also determine whether any parent or guardian may have been negligent or complicit in the circumstances surrounding the case.

The police condemned all forms of child abuse, exploitation and violence against minors and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and ensuring justice for victims.

The command added that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals linked to the alleged abuse, while the arrested suspect was assisting investigators with further information.
