Vice President Kashim Shettima and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, have commissioned the 33.5-kilometre Elele–Egbeda–Omoku Dual Carriageway in Rivers State.

Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu at the event on Thursday, was received at the Port Harcourt International Airport by Governor Fubara, members of the State Executive Council, federal lawmakers, ministers and other senior government officials.

The road cuts across Ikwerre, Emohua and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas and is expected to improve transportation, boost economic activities and facilitate the movement of people and goods across the communities.

Speaking at the commissioning, Shettima described road infrastructure as a key driver of economic development, noting that efficient roads enable farmers, traders, workers, students and patients to move more easily.

He said the newly completed road had replaced a previously deteriorated route characterised by deep gullies, difficult journeys and security challenges.

According to him, the dual carriageway would help farmers transport their produce with fewer losses, enable traders to access wider markets and reduce logistics costs for businesses.

The Vice President commended Fubara for committing state resources to the project and bringing it to completion, stressing that continuity in governance allows successive administrations to build on existing initiatives for the benefit of citizens.

Fubara, in turn, described the project as more than a road, saying it demonstrated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of communities along the corridor.

The governor noted that the route had previously been associated with kidnapping and illegal oil bunkering, expressing confidence that the improved road would enhance security operations.

He also highlighted the installation of lighting along the entire stretch of the road, saying the illumination would help deter criminal activities and make night-time movement safer.

Fubara thanked the Federal Government for its support, describing the completion of the project as evidence that his administration had fulfilled its promise to the people.
