President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerian youths to remain in the country and contribute to its development, declaring that the nation’s future belongs to those who stay and help solve its challenges rather than those who choose to leave.

Speaking during his Democracy Day address on Friday, the President urged young Nigerians to channel their talents and energy into nation-building, despite growing concerns over the increasing wave of emigration popularly known as “japa.”

“To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here. Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship,” Tinubu said.

The President’s remarks come amid continued migration of skilled Nigerians, particularly professionals in the technology, healthcare, and academic sectors, who have relocated abroad in search of better economic opportunities and living conditions.

Tinubu stressed that the benefits of democracy must translate into improved economic realities for citizens, especially the younger generation.

“Democracy must be felt in the pocket,” he stated, highlighting government initiatives aimed at creating opportunities and stimulating economic growth.

Among the programmes cited were the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the National Agricultural Development Fund’s plan to deploy 10,000 tractors over a five-year period, and the certification of more than 1,000 small and medium-scale enterprises for export.

According to the President, the current generation has a historic responsibility to build on the achievements of previous generations by securing economic prosperity for the country.

“Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence. The generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity,” he said.

Tinubu’s message underscores the administration’s efforts to encourage youth participation in national development while addressing concerns over the growing exodus of skilled professionals from the country.
