Nollywood actress and media personality, Toke Makinwa, has pushed back against the notion that contemporary Nigerian women are overly materialistic or enter relationships primarily for financial gain.

According to Makinwa, relationships between men and women have historically involved some form of exchange, arguing that romantic partnerships have always carried a transactional element.

Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, she suggested that Nigerian men contribute to the perception of materialism among women because many rely heavily on financial resources as their main attraction in relationships.

She said relationships have operated in a transactional manner since ancient times and maintained that the current trend is partly a reflection of men’s approach to dating.

Makinwa argued that many Nigerian men, once financially successful, often use money as their primary means of attracting women rather than offering deeper qualities or building genuine connections.

She noted that in some cases, women who initially seek meaningful relationships are met with financial offers instead, reinforcing the idea that money is the most valuable thing men can bring to a relationship.

The actress further claimed that repeated experiences of this nature have encouraged some women to become more demanding, adding that many of the material expectations associated with modern dating were shaped by the behaviour of men themselves.

According to her, some men have made unusual financial propositions to women, creating the impression that wealth alone is sufficient to win affection or sustain a relationship.
