A driver has died in the early hours of Saturday following a fatal lone crash involving a Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle that somersaulted several times along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos State.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said the accident occurred around Charity Bus Stop inward Iyana Isolo.

According to him, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently overturned repeatedly before coming to a stop, resulting in a deadly impact.

The force of the crash left the SUV severely damaged and the driver trapped inside the wreckage, leading to his instant death.

LASTMA officials, who were on traffic monitoring duty around the Iyana Isolo axis, reportedly arrived promptly at the scene after the incident was reported.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle involved in the incident suddenly lost control, causing it to overturn multiple times before coming to a devastating halt,” the statement said.

“The sheer magnitude of the impact led to the instantaneous death of the driver, whose body became trapped within the severely mangled remains of the vehicle,” it added.

The agency noted that its operatives, working alongside officers of the Mosafejo Police Division, carried out the removal of the deceased from the wreckage while also managing traffic flow to prevent further accidents.

“LASTMA personnel, who were actively engaged in traffic monitoring and management duties within the Iyana Isolo axis at the time of the incident, responded expeditiously to the emergency,” the statement added.

Officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit later evacuated the body to a public morgue, while the damaged vehicle was handed over to the police for further investigation.

Reacting to the tragedy, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commiserated with the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads.

He warned against speeding, reckless driving and dangerous overtaking, stressing the need for road users to prioritise safety at all times.

“Motorists are strongly urged to eschew reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, excessive speeding and all forms of traffic violations capable of causing avoidable tragedies,” he said.

“The sanctity and preservation of human life must remain paramount. No journey is so urgent as to justify compromising safety,” he added.

The incident comes a day after three people were also reported dead in another crash along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, underscoring ongoing concerns about road safety in the region.
