African teams experienced a mixed start to the FIFA World Cup after the completion of the first round of group-stage matches, scoring seven goals while conceding 16 across 10 fixtures.
The opening round produced varied outcomes for the continent’s representatives, with a blend of wins, draws, and defeats shaping the early standings.
Tunisia suffered the heaviest loss, going down 5–1 to Sweden, while Senegal were beaten 3–1 by France. South Africa lost 2–0 to Mexico, and Algeria fell 3–0 to Argentina in other disappointing results.
Despite the setbacks, several African teams recorded positive outcomes. Ivory Coast edged Ecuador 1–0, while Ghana also secured a narrow 1–0 win over Panama.
Morocco earned a respectable 1–1 draw against Brazil, Egypt held Belgium to the same scoreline, Cape Verde frustrated Spain in a goalless draw, and DR Congo also drew 1–1 with Portugal.
Overall, the 10 African teams registered two victories, three draws, and five defeats, reflecting a competitive but inconsistent start to the tournament.
Focus now shifts to the second round of group fixtures, with matches already underway as South Africa face Czechia in a crucial encounter for their qualification hopes.
