Shearer: England’s Away Win Over Spain Better Than World Cup Semis
The shockwaves continue in the wake of England’s devastating win over Spain on Monday, and former Three Lions captain, Alan Shearer, believes the manner of the performance ranks higher than England getting to the World Cup semi-final.
Led by Gareth Southgate, Spain were 3-0 down for the first time ever in a competitive match, though La Roja recovered in part to end the game 3-2.
“In ten years people will continue talking about that night in Seville,” Shearer wrote in his column for The Sun.
“It was something I haven’t seen in an England team for a long, long time.
“Reaching the semifinal of the World Cup gave us all hope, but achieving such a performance in Spain has reinforced it.”
The win sees England move to four points in their UEFA Nations League group, and with a mathematical chance of still making the ‘Final Four’ next June.
“Ben Chilwell seemed to have been England’s left-back for years,” Shearer enthused.
“You would never have thought that Raheem Sterling hadn’t scored in three years and soon a goal will come for Harry Kane.”
