Read Time:1 Minute, 27 Second

An elderly man thought to be in his late 70s was hit by an unidentified Okada rider along Isheri-Oshun Road in Jakande Estate, Isolo, Lagos.

An Okada rider allegedly collided with an elderly man who alighted from another Okada along the road, causing the incident on Thursday.

The elderly man reportedly died within minutes of being knocked down by the motorcyclist.

Residents stormed out of their homes in a rage and attacked cyclists on the roads. An estimated forty motorcycles were set ablaze by enraged sympathisers and their families.

According to eyewitnesses, the Okada Rider who was transporting the elderly man passed out on the spot.

“When the incident occurred, other Okada Riders did not help the old man,” they claim. Rather, they were attempting to assist the Okada Rider in escaping after he had struck the elderly.

They claimed that “when the public observed what happened, they did not hesitate to attack the Okada Riders on the road.”

Residents and other Okada riders were forced to avoid the area for their own safety. Other Okada Riders have been unable to perform the routes as a result of the circumstances, as people have yet to recover from their shock.

Police officers were said to have leapt into action to deal with the issue.

It was also learned that the officers transported the injured Okada Rider to the hospital and evacuated the deceased.

PPRO Benjamin Hundeyin of the Lagos State Police Command reported that “an angry mob was already burning the motorcycles left behind by the fleeing riders” before the police arrived.

“The Lagos State Police Command strongly rejects jungle justice,” he stated.

The PPRO, on the other hand, cautioned that anyone caught doing so would face legal consequences.
