The Benue State Police Command has launched a full-scale manhunt for suspected kidnappers who abducted several passengers from a commercial bus in Okpokwu Local Government Area on Sunday evening.
The attackers ambushed a Hummer bus with registration number 14B-143BN at about 6:30 p.m. along the Eke axis, robbing the passengers before dragging some of them into the surrounding bush.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident in a statement to Channels Television on Monday. He disclosed that one of the abducted victims, identified as Paul Terns, was rescued during a swift joint operation involving police tactical teams, military personnel, and members of the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards.
“Upon receiving the report, security operatives moved swiftly to the scene, combed the bush, and rescued one of the victims, Paul Terns, who managed to escape from the kidnappers,” Edet said.

He added that additional reinforcements have been deployed to the area to intensify the search and rescue operation for the remaining victims.
The kidnapping comes at a time of heightened insecurity in Benue State, which has witnessed a string of violent incidents, including killings and mass displacement attributed to suspected armed herders. The recent wave of attacks has triggered protests, outrage, and appeals for urgent action.
Last week, President Bola Tinubu visited the state amid growing pressure, meeting with victims and inaugurating a peace committee tasked with engaging traditional rulers to restore order and rebuild confidence across affected communities.
