The Kano Police Command has stated that the detonation observed in the eastern bypass of the state was caused by Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) rather than an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as previously conjectured.

The Command’s Assistant Police Public Relations Officer, Hussaini Abdullahi, stated that the disclosure ensued subsequent to a post-explosion inquiry conducted by the Command’s cohort of Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit personnel.

Abdullahi stated that the unexploded ordnance had been inadvertently transported together with scrap metals from Yobe State, and one of these devices inadvertently detonated during the unloading procedure.

He further stated that the squad had retrieved an aggregate of nine unexploded ordnance following the tragic event that resulted in the fatalities of five individuals and inflicted various levels of injuries on several others.

As per his statement, “Subsequent to the explosion incident at Yongxing Steel Company situated along Ring Road, Mariri Quarters, Kano, at approximately 11:30 AM on Saturday, the 21st of June, 2025, a post-blast analysis conducted by the command’s team of Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit Personnel indicates that the explosion was derived from an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), rather than from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as was initially conjectured.

“The UXOs had been unknowingly conveyed alongside scrap metals from Yobe State, and one of them was accidentally exploded during the process of offloading.

“Premised on this, the command urges members of the public to remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic, as there is no imminent security threat.

“Furthermore, in addition to the earlier 7 recovered UXOs, 2 UXOs were later recovered from the scene, bringing it to a total of nine that have been recovered.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, conveys his sympathies to the relatives of the five individuals who perished in the explosion and offers prayers for the swift recovery of the others injured, all of whom are presently undergoing treatment at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano.

“The Command encourages inhabitants to conduct their legitimate affairs without apprehension and graciously requests that any pertinent information or observed suspicious behavior be communicated to the Police via our emergency contact numbers,” Abdullahi affirmed.
