Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the No. 20 shirt in memory of their late forward, Diogo Jota, following his tragic death in a car accident.
The Portuguese star, who passed away alongside his brother André in a fatal crash in Spain, was laid to rest last Saturday.
In tribute, the club announced on Friday night that Jota’s iconic number would be retired permanently across all levels — including the men’s, women’s, and academy teams.
After consultations with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family, Liverpool made the decision to honour his legacy by retiring the jersey he wore during his time at the club.
Jota joined the Reds from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and played a key role in their success, helping the club secure major honours including the Premier League title.
Liverpool said the gesture ensures that Diogo Jota’s name and contributions will always be remembered at Anfield.
“It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention,” Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football via Liverpool’s website.
“I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.
“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten.”
