MOVEMENT HALTED AT BERGER AS SECURITY OPERATIVES ENFORCE LAGOS ELECTION RESTRICTIONS
Vehicular and pedestrian movement came to a standstill at the Berger axis of Lagos on Saturday morning as security operatives barricaded key access routes into the state ahead of the local government elections.
At approximately 7:32 a.m., scores of commuters were left stranded, while several vehicles were turned back by a combined team of police officers and Federal Road Safety Corps personnel enforcing the restriction order. Military operatives were also spotted patrolling the area.
The barricade led to long queues of stationary vehicles, forcing many passengers to disembark and trek considerable distances to reach their destinations.
Some residents expressed frustration, stating that they were unaware of the movement restriction despite the elections.
“We are unaware that there was an election in the state. We are just coming from Port Harcourt. We are here for something. We are going to Ikeja,” said one stranded commuter who was ultimately denied passage by police at the checkpoint.
The Lagos State Police Command had earlier announced a restriction of movement from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of the local government elections. The elections are aimed at producing new leadership for the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
