Tragedy unfolded on Sunday evening in the Abedi Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government, Kano State, as an uncompleted three-storey building collapsed, claiming four lives and leaving seven others injured.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident on Monday after hours of search and rescue operations led by its Kano Territorial Office.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, NEMA Coordinator Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi said the structure gave way around 6:49 p.m. following a prolonged and intense downpour.
“Upon receiving the distress alert, we immediately mobilized our Search and Rescue (SAR) response team to the scene in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders,” he said.
According to Abdullahi, eyewitnesses reported that several people were inside the structure when it gave way, many of whom were trapped under the debris.
“As of 1:56 a.m. on Monday, two persons had been confirmed dead, while six others were rescued with injuries,” he said.
However, updated figures from the agency later confirmed that four lives were lost in the incident, with seven others sustaining varying degrees of injury.
Emergency operations have since been concluded at the scene, while authorities are expected to carry out a structural assessment to determine the cause of the collapse and safeguard nearby buildings.
The incident has renewed public concern over the safety of uncompleted structures, especially in flood-prone areas during the rainy season.
