Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spanish left-back Álvaro Carreras from Portuguese club Benfica on a six-year contract, the La Liga giants confirmed on Monday.
The 22-year-old defender, a product of Madrid’s youth academy, returns to the Bernabéu in a deal reportedly worth close to €50 million (\$58 million). Carreras had previously left Madrid to join Manchester United in 2020 before eventually moving to Benfica.
“Real Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Álvaro Carreras, who will be under contract with our club for the next six seasons, until 30 June 2031,” the club announced in an official statement.
Carreras made 62 appearances for Benfica, scoring five goals. He initially joined the Portuguese side on loan from Manchester United before signing permanently in 2024 for €6 million.
The young full-back becomes the fourth major signing of Real Madrid’s summer overhaul, following the arrivals of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Franco Mastantuono with the total transfer spending estimated at around €170 million.
Following a disappointing 2024–25 season in which Los Blancos failed to secure any major silverware, head coach Carlo Ancelotti stepped down and was replaced by former Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso.
Alonso, tasked with rebuilding the squad, has already steered the team to the Club World Cup semi-finals, though Madrid suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the competition.
