The Sokoto State Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, as a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by Abubakar Bawa, Director General of Media and Publicity to Governor Ahmed Aliyu. The declaration follows a joint resolution by the North West Governors’ Forum to observe a work-free day across all states in the region as a mark of respect to the late elder statesman.

Governor Aliyu urged citizens of Sokoto State to observe the day solemnly and dedicate prayers for the repose of the late president’s soul.

“He also prayed for Almighty Allah’s mercy upon Buhari, asking that his shortcomings be forgiven and his good deeds rewarded with eternal peace,” the statement read.

Funeral prayers for the former president will be held on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.

Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria both as a military Head of State (1984–1985) and as a democratically elected president (2015–2023). He was widely known for his advocacy of integrity, discipline, and national unity throughout his decades of public service.

His passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences and tributes from across Nigeria and the international community.
