Eighteen students of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, narrowly escaped death on Wednesday when the commercial bus conveying them suddenly caught fire while in motion.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:54 a.m. along Shao Road, near the Sobi Army Barracks, as the students were travelling from Ilorin to attend lectures on campus. The 18-seater bus, with registration number XUF 134 ZD, was completely consumed by fire, but all passengers escaped unhurt.

Confirming the incident, the Head of Media and Publicity for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said the service received a distress call and responded swiftly, successfully extinguishing the flames before further harm could occur.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated from a spark in the engine compartment, which rapidly escalated and engulfed the entire vehicle,” the statement read.

Despite the total loss of the vehicle, the quick response by the fire crew ensured that no lives were lost.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince John Falade Famuyiwa, extended his sympathies to the vehicle owner and urged road users to perform regular maintenance checks on their vehicles before embarking on journeys, as a preventive measure against such life-threatening incidents.
