The contest for regional dominance commences on Wednesday (today) as West Africa’s table tennis giants assemble at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall,  Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, for the 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships.

This esteemed competition, acting as a qualifier for the 2025 African Championships scheduled to occur later this year in Kigali, Rwanda, will witness Nigeria—the host country—contend against leading teams from the region in both team and individual events over the forthcoming four days.

Historically, Nigeria has prevailed in the region; however, recent years have witnessed increasing challenges from countries such as Togo and the Ivory Coast. The rivalry is anticipated to be intense, particularly following Togo’s remarkable 3-2 victory  over Nigeria’s prominent men’s team in the 2024 edition in Lomé.

In the women’s category, Nigeria is expected to maintain its dominance despite the absence of reigning singles champion Hope Udoaka. Veteran Ajoke Ojomu will captain the team, guiding rising stars Aishat Rabiu and Aziza Sezuo in their quest to retain the title.

The four-day competition will conclude on Saturday, July 19, with the individual finals, while team champions will be designated on Thursday, July 17.
