President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Abuja for Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to attend the eighth-day prayer ceremony held in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
The development was disclosed on Sunday by the President’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has left Abuja for Ijebu-Ode to attend the eighth-day prayer ceremony for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona,” Olusegun wrote.
The revered monarch died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 and was buried the following day in accordance with Islamic rites. His passing brought to a close a historic 65-year reign one of the longest by any traditional ruler in Nigeria.
In preparation for the solemn ceremony, security has been tightened throughout Ijebu-Ode, with increased presence around major locations such as Dipo Dina International Stadium, the Awujale’s Palace, and his private residence in Igbeba.
The eighth-day prayer is being held at the Dipo Dina International Stadium and is expected to draw a host of dignitaries, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and other top government officials, traditional rulers, and prominent Nigerians.
The event marks a significant moment in Ijebuland, as the people pay their last respects to a monarch widely regarded for his leadership, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the development of his kingdom and the preservation of Yoruba culture.
