The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) is set to launch a major housing initiative, the Diaspora Home and Abroad Platform, as part of events to mark the sixth edition of National Diaspora Day, scheduled for July 25 and 26, 2025, at the State House Conference Centre, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, said the platform was created to offer “safe, reliable, and accessible housing options” to Nigerians living abroad.
She noted that this year’s celebration would go beyond rhetoric to foster meaningful collaboration with diaspora communities.

“In 2024 alone, Nigerians in the diaspora sent home over $20 billion, more than the country’s foreign direct investment,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
“But beyond the numbers is a wealth of knowledge, skills, and global exposure that we must now channel into nation-building,” she added.
The 2025 theme, “Optimising Formidable Diaspora Potentials for National Development and Growth”, reflects what she described as a shift toward more action-driven diaspora engagement.
Over 1,200 participants are expected to attend physically, while thousands more will join virtually from across the globe.
In a nod to Africa’s global connections, 25 African American visitors will also join the Abuja celebration, signalling strengthened ties between Nigeria and the historic African diaspora.
Dabiri-Erewa highlighted NiDCOM’s recent efforts to institutionalise diaspora engagement through several initiatives, including the establishment of Diaspora Focal Point Officers across states, the National Diaspora Policy, the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS), the ongoing Diaspora Data Mapping, and consistent interactions with Nigerians abroad.
As part of this year’s event, a Youth Empowerment Summit will spotlight the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in driving national development. Students from 14 secondary schools across Abuja will participate.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Mr. Abiodun Akanbi, disclosed that over 500 young people are expected to attend the STEM summit, which forms an integral part of the two-day hybrid event.
Other major highlights will include investment fora, plenary sessions, and networking opportunities with key stakeholders from government and the private sector.
The celebration will wrap up with the prestigious National Diaspora Merit Awards, honouring distinguished Nigerians in the diaspora who are making impactful contributions globally.
