At least six worshippers were killed and more than ten others injured in a tragic stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand State, northern India, on Sunday.

According to local officials, the incident occurred on the stairway leading to the popular Hindu temple situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges River. The deadly crush happened as a massive crowd surged forward during a religious gathering.

“Six dead and more than 10 injured are admitted to the hospital,” confirmed senior city police official Parmendra Dobhal in a statement to AFP.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that emergency services were quickly deployed and that relief and rescue efforts are ongoing. “I am constantly in touch with the local administration regarding this matter, and continuous monitoring of the situation is being done,” he said.

Crowd crushes and stampedes are frequent at Indian religious festivals, often due to poor crowd control measures and overwhelming attendance.

This latest tragedy follows a series of similar incidents this year. In June, three people were killed during a stampede at a Hindu festival in Odisha, while in May, six devotees died in Goa during a fire-walking ritual. Earlier in January, more than 30 people lost their lives during a massive early morning crush at the Kumbh Mela festival in Prayagraj.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the Haridwar incident as families mourn the loss of loved ones during what was meant to be a moment of worship and devotion.
