The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a strong warning to Nigerians planning to travel to the U.S. with the primary intention of giving birth to secure American citizenship for their children.

In a post shared on its official X account (formerly Twitter), the U.S. Mission emphasized that using a visa primarily for childbirth purposes violates U.S. immigration laws.

“Traveling to the United States primarily to give birth so that your child automatically acquires U.S. citizenship is not allowed,” the statement emphasized.

“Visa applications will be denied by consular officers if there is reason to believe that this is your main intention.”

This warning comes as U.S. authorities place increased focus on visa screening and enforcement, particularly targeting what is commonly known as “birth tourism” — where individuals travel to the U.S. for the purpose of childbirth to secure citizenship for their child.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of State recently updated its visa reciprocity rules, announcing that most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas for Nigerian nationals will now be limited to single-entry and valid for only three months.

The United States reiterated that these visa regulations are aligned with international security standards and are intended to safeguard the integrity of its immigration system.
