A 59-year-old individual, Sunday Jimoh, appeared before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun on Friday, charged with the alleged theft of cocoa beans valued at N1 million.

Jimoh, whose residence was not disclosed, is facing three counts of theft, willful damage, and disturbance of the peace, to which he has entered a plea of not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Adesina Elijah, informed the court that the accused committed the offenses on August 11 at 10 a.m. in Itamarun Village, Ile-Ife.

Elijah claimed that the accused forcibly entered a farm belonging to the complainant, Mr. Ewu Tojola, and unlawfully took the cocoa beans.

He also asserted that the accused intentionally and unlawfully damaged certain economically significant trees owned by the complainant.

Elijah contended that the accused acted in a manner likely to disturb public order.

The prosecutor indicated that the offenses contravened Sections 82, 383, and 388 of the Criminal Law of Osun, 2002.

Defense Counsel, Mr. Martins Awe, requested the court to grant his client bail on the most lenient terms, assuring that he would not abscond.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Kikelomo Adebayo, approved bail for the defendant in the amount of N500,000, requiring one surety of equivalent value.

Adebayo stipulated that the surety must submit an affidavit of means and reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

Additionally, she specified that the surety must be a blood relative of the defendant and provide evidence of three years of tax payments made to the Osun Government.

Adebayo adjourned the proceedings until September 19 for further mention.
