The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, on Thursday brokered a peace deal between the Federal Government and indigenous contractors following months of unpaid debts that recently triggered a peaceful protest in Abuja.

Over 80 contractors from across the country attended a marathon four-hour meeting convened by Kalu in his capacity as Chairman of the House Special Committee on Budget Implementation. Also present were the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, and other top government officials.

At the end of the meeting, all parties resolved to commence payments to contractors from Monday, September 8, 2025. Kalu commended President Bola Tinubu’s appointees for what he described as humility and diligence in handling the matter, adding that progress would be reviewed on September 21.

Finance Minister Wale Edun praised Kalu’s intervention, confirming that an “orderly and systematic” payment plan had been agreed upon. He said, “Once again, we commend the leadership of the House of Representatives and the contractors for their willingness to dialogue. After Friday’s holiday, the Central Bank will open again on Monday and payments will commence immediately.”

Accountant-General Ogunjimi corroborated the timeline, assuring contractors that funds would begin “dropping” from Monday.

The peace deal comes months after lawmakers, including Senator Abdul Ningi, raised concerns over the non-payment of contractors since 2024, despite repeated assurances from the Federal Government.
