The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old school gateman, Josiah Ayomide, over the alleged defilement of a four-year-old pupil in Ibadan.
Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing journalists at the command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.
According to Osifeso, the victim first complained of pains in her private part to her elder sister on August 29, 2025. Upon further inquiry, she confided in her mother that the school gatekeeper had unlawfully raped her while she was in school.
“The suspect has been arrested and confessed to the crime. The case is currently under investigation,” Osifeso confirmed.
The PPRO also noted that the command recently apprehended other criminal suspects, including kidnappers, armed robbers, and hijackers, as part of ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.
The incident adds to a growing list of reported cases of child sexual abuse within Nigerian schools, sparking renewed calls for stricter screening of school staff and improved child protection measures.
Similar cases have been reported across the country. On August 27, 2025, the Bauchi State Police Command arrested five men accused of repeatedly raping a 10-year-old girl in the Zadawa community of Misau Local Government Area.
Advocacy groups, including Stand to End Rape Initiative and Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative, have urged state governments and education authorities to adopt rigorous vetting of school personnel, continuous monitoring, and public awareness campaigns to safeguard children from sexual predators.
