The Edo State Police Command has rescued a kidnap victim, Elohor Osifoh, who was abducted on September 10, and foiled an attempted abduction of three other travellers along the Benin–Lagos expressway.

Police spokesperson, SP Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that operatives of the Okada Division, led by CSP Opatoyinbo John, responded swiftly to a distress call in the early hours of September 13.

According to Yamu, armed hoodlums had blocked the highway with logs and opened fire on a Toyota Sienna bus conveying fingerling fish from Lagos to Akwa Ibom. The vehicle, with registration number KUJ 342 CU (Abuja), was driven by 51-year-old Nana Aghogho, who had two passengers on board.

“The operatives engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to abandon their criminal mission and flee into the bush. The driver and passengers, identified as Oseghale Mathias (40) and John Edobor (24), were rescued unhurt,” the statement read.

The barricades were quickly cleared, restoring traffic flow and ensuring the safety of other road users.

In a related operation, operatives of the Ekpoma Division, led by SP Nelson Igbinoba, successfully rescued Osifoh after days of bush combing and reunited her with her family.

The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, commended the operatives for their gallantry and assured residents of the command’s commitment to intensify patrols, stop-and-search operations, and targeted raids to rid the state of criminal elements.

He urged travellers to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to the nearest police station.

The latest operations follow a series of security measures adopted by the Edo Police Command to curb rising cases of highway abductions, particularly along the Benin–Lagos and Benin–Auchi expressways.

In August, police operatives rescued several abducted passengers along the Benin–Ekpoma road and arrested suspects linked to kidnapping syndicates in the state.

The command described its recent successes, including Osifoh’s rescue, as part of its “renewed strategy of rapid response and proactive engagement” against criminal elements.
