Two persons have been confirmed dead following a petrol tanker accident at Pasa Village along the Ilorin–Jebba Expressway on Tuesday afternoon.

The Kwara State Fire Service, in a statement by its Head of Media and Publicity, Hassan Adekunle, said the incident occurred at about 3:43 p.m. when a tanker carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with registration number NSR 966 ZQ lost control, veered off the road, and overturned, sparking a massive fire.

Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene and extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby traffic. Unfortunately, the tanker driver and his motor boy died instantly.

Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, commiserated with the bereaved families and cautioned motorists, especially tanker drivers, to prioritise safety on highways.

He stressed the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, adherence to speed limits, avoiding night journeys, and ensuring drivers are well-rested to prevent fatigue-related crashes.

Olumuyiwa also urged all motorists to equip their vehicles with fire extinguishers and to promptly report emergencies for timely intervention.
