Lagos, October 13, 2025 — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into two travelers, Mamud Nasidi and Yahaya Nasidi, who were arrested for allegedly failing to declare foreign currencies totaling $6,180 and £53,415 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

According to a statement by the EFCC, operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 commenced investigations after the suspects were intercepted by officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) during a routine check on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The duo, who had just arrived in Nigeria from Dubai via Addis Ababa and were scheduled to connect to Abuja, were found in possession of the undeclared sums, contrary to airport regulations requiring travelers to declare large amounts of foreign currency.

Following their arrest, the suspects were first handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS), which later transferred them to the EFCC for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The EFCC said it also recovered three mobile phones from the suspects during the handover process.

The suspects and the seized exhibits were officially received by CSE Margaret Lamai on behalf of the acting Zonal Director of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE I) Ahmed Ghali.

The anti-graft agency stated that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects would be charged to court once the probe is concluded.
