MATCH PREVIEW: NIGERIA FACE GABON IN CRUCIAL 2026 WORLD CUP PLAY-OFF CLASH
By: Sefiu Ajape
Nigeria may have missed out on automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but Thursday’s semi-final play-off against Gabon presents a crucial lifeline for the Super Eagles to secure a spot in the global football showpiece scheduled to be held in North America next year.
The Super Eagles, one of Africa’s football giants, lost the Group C automatic slot to South Africa, finishing second on 17 points—just one behind the Bafana Bafana after the last round of qualifiers last month.
In fact, the 2013 AFCON champions only managed to sneak into the playoffs on superior goal difference ahead of the Stallions of Burkina Faso. They needed a convincing 4-0 win over Benin Republic to edge their West African neighbors and claim the final playoff spot.
When they face the Panthers of Gabon at the Stade Prince Moulay Al Hassan in Rabat, Morocco, the Super Eagles will hope for a similar outcome to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
Nigeria’s early qualifying campaign was far from ideal, with the team collecting just three points from their first four matches. However, they bounced back strongly to finish with 17 points, in sharp contrast to Gabon’s 25 points, which left them just behind Group F winners Côte d’Ivoire.
Nigeria vs Gabon: Form Guide
Though Nigeria faltered at the beginning of the qualifiers, the team has since found stability under Eric Chelle, who took charge in January. The Super Eagles have won three of their last four World Cup qualifiers, drawing the other away to South Africa.
Gabon have posted a similar run, also winning three and drawing one—against Côte d’Ivoire—in their last four qualification games.
Osimhen, Aubameyang Headline Stars to Watch
Both sides boast exceptional attacking talents, with Victor Osimhen, a former African Player of the Year, spearheading Nigeria’s attack. Gabon, on their part, will rely on the experience and skill of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, another ex-African Footballer of the Year who has featured for top European clubs, including Arsenal, Barcelona, and Borussia Dortmund.
Osimhen was in blistering form during the qualifiers, netting a hat trick against Benin Republic, while Aubameyang also grabbed a four-goal haul in Gabon’s emphatic win over The Gambia. The Super Eagles will hope their star striker continues his fine form, having recently scored a Champions League hat-trick for Galatasaray against Dutch side Ajax.
Nigeria’s attacking strength is further bolstered by Ademola Lookman—the reigning African Player of the Year—alongside Samuel Chukwueze, Calvin Bassey, and Moses Simon. Gabon will look to Denis Bouanga and Noah Lemina to complement their 36-year-old captain, Aubameyang.
Aubameyang’s father, Pierre-François Aubameyang, once featured against Nigeria at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, where Gabon lost 0–3 to the Super Eagles.
Head-to-Head Record
Nigeria and Gabon have met nine times, with Nigeria winning five, drawing three, and losing just once—their only defeat dating back 36 years, in an Italia ’90 World Cup qualifier that ended 2–1 in favor of Gabon.
Their last meeting was in 2005, when Nigeria triumphed 2–0 in a 2006 World Cup qualifying match, although they later missed out on the tournament after losing the ticket to Angola on head-to-head record.
