INSECURITY: APC BACKS URGENT BORDER FENCING TO STRENGTHEN SECURITY

BY JENN NOMAMIUKOR
A security specialist and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has urged the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s federal government to quickly take action on improving border security. This includes building fences along Nigeria’s borders, which are known to be difficult to control.
In a statement issued on Friday by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni warned that the country’s unguarded borders are facilitating terrorist infiltration and worsening the nation’s security challenges.
He remembered that the new Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa (rtd), had already made a similar request earlier this year, highlighting the urgent need to protect Nigeria’s borders. He explained that securing the borders is important because it helps prevent the flow of weapons, the spread of terrorists, and other serious security problems.
Mumuni suggested installing strong fences along Nigeria’s borders with nearby countries, equipped with special devices that can detect and track movement early on.
He gave examples of successful border security systems, like those on the U.S.-Mexico border, Israel’s security walls, and India’s strong borders with Pakistan.
He pointed out that Nigeria’s location, with many shared borders, makes it very open to infiltration by terrorist groups.
He also said recent events showed how easily these borders can be used for harmful activities.
“Investing in border security infrastructure will not only prevent cross-border terrorism but also improve the general security architecture of the nation.”
