Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has said decisions on power-sharing and religious balance should be guided by justice and equity rather than fear or political pressure.

Dogara made the remarks on the media , amid speculation that Vice-President Kashim Shettima may be dropped as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.

He emphasised that governance should be inclusive and fair, stressing that national cohesion can only be achieved when all groups feel represented.

Responding to reports linking his name to possible running mate permutations for the president’s re-election bid, Dogara dismissed the speculation, urging that he be excluded from such discussions.

He said political decisions should be taken because they are morally right, not because of external pressure, adding that inclusiveness is central to building a nation that works for all citizens.

Dogara also noted that discussions around rotational presidency should consider religious balance beyond regional lines. According to him, representation should reflect broader faith communities, whether Muslim or Christian, regardless of geographical origin.

He argued that justice demands balance, saying any arrangement along religious lines should be based on conviction rather than fear.

On the possibility of the All Progressives Congress (APC) fielding a Christian running mate in 2027, Dogara said the matter is under discussion. He added that incumbents typically secure their party’s ticket and that the final decision rests with the president.

However, he said that as a democrat, Tinubu would likely consider the views of party members and the wider public if there is strong consensus in favour of balancing the ticket. Dogara also cautioned against dividing the north along religious lines, warning that such divisions undermine unity in the region.
