Nigeria and Türkiye have intensified efforts to strengthen military and defence collaboration following high-level talks between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, in Ankara.

The discussions, held ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Türkiye, also focused on expanding political, economic, security and multilateral cooperation between both countries.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by Tuggar’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, the minister described the engagement as a reflection of the growing strategic partnership between Nigeria and Türkiye.

According to the statement, both ministers reviewed existing bilateral relations and identified new areas of cooperation, with Tuggar placing strong emphasis on boosting bilateral trade and increasing mutual investments.

He highlighted key sectors of interest to Turkish companies, including construction, manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, while both sides acknowledged the steady growth in economic relations and stressed the need to unlock further opportunities through structured public–private sector engagement.

On security matters, the two countries explored avenues to deepen cooperation in military affairs and the defence industry, signalling a shared commitment to strengthening security ties.

Fidan commended Nigeria’s role in promoting regional stability, peace and prosperity in West Africa, noting the country’s leadership within regional and continental frameworks.

The statement noted that Tuggar’s visit—his first official trip to Türkiye—underscores the deepening strategic relationship between the two nations, anchored on shared principles of sovereignty, institutional cooperation and pragmatic partnership, with both sides expressing confidence in stronger engagement in the coming years.
