NIGERIAN ARMY, NAPTIP ARREST SEVEN SUSPECTED HUMAN TRAFFICKERS IN CALABAR, RESCUE NEWBORN

The Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has arrested seven suspected human traffickers in Calabar, Cross River State, and rescued a newborn baby from an illegal sale.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation conducted on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in Calabar Municipality Local Government Area, the Army disclosed in a statement.
According to Maj. Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the operation targeted Glorious Amazing Grace Hospital in the Ikot Ekpo area, where the suspects were attempting to sell a day-old baby boy for ₦3 million.
“The suspects were apprehended while negotiations were ongoing to sell the infant, an act that constitutes a grave violation of the law and a serious breach of fundamental human rights,” Sokoya said.
Those arrested include 54-year-old Glory Emmanuel, 35-year-old Anthony Bassey, 27-year-old Uduak John, 35-year-old Deborah Edet, 35-year-old Ruth Asoquo, 35-year-old Frada Donald, all from Cross River State, and 23-year-old Blessing Okon from Akwa Ibom State.

The rescued infant has been secured and placed under the care of appropriate authorities, while the suspects were transferred for further investigation and legal action in line with extant laws.
The Army reiterated its commitment to working with civil authorities and relevant agencies to combat human trafficking, child abuse, and other criminal activities within its area of responsibility.
“Members of the public are encouraged to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely, credible, and actionable information to enhance the safety and security of lives and property,” Sokoya added.
